Whoa, BNSFline! I know you're just kidding and being poetic but your statement does evoke memories!

I painted transit coaches with DuPont Imron for years. Very glossy, tough, and durable paint as long as you didn't take shorcuts with it. Use cheap primers and sealers underneath, and it would peel off like onion skin.

Imron's Smell?
A deep "snootful" will knock a strong man on his "keester". One of the Collision Shop Techs that worked with us was a 270 pound ex-police officer who was a weightlifter. A fun good guy, Big Pete sprayed the stuff almost everyday. After just 2 years he grew sick and had to quit on disability. Constantly dizzy, coughing and spitting. He was a mess! Problem was that he would only use a charcoal mask when painting Imron instead of wearing the "Fresh Supplied Air hood" system that was recommended by DuPont.

For a long time, I was the only one that used the fresh air hoods ( I was the new kid on the block that was trying to go by the book)

Common sense would dictate that if an automotive paint product is reputed to be a "Super Tough Polyurethane", then the contents in the can are very likely Super Toxic! Some guys still didn't take it seriously.

It was hard back in the 80s to get the guys to put on "appropriate" safety gear. "Too bulky" was always the complaint. Attitude was that charcoal masks were good enough"[:(!]

Today, transit maintenace shops are a lot tougher on enforciing the safety standards due to all the "Workman's Comp" claims. From what I've heard the Class 1s are also strict on maintenance shop safety. [4:-)]

Peace and High Greens!

Once they hit the area out west, you can forget about the good smell and the good paint...you wont be able to see the paint anymore. I saw a unit less than a month old in a photo once, it looked like it was 30+years old.

Now, if UP can only keep them looking reasonably good, then I will be REALLY impressed.

Ah yes,

I love riding in brand new engines. The only ones I've ridden in are SD70M's (UP's) or SD70MAC's (CSX). And yes they do have that "new engine" smell to them.

Nice looking units. Nothing beats a day where you can see three brand new flag units that are still clean!
