Depending on the size of the railroad, the hostler could be the one who refuels the engine, fills it with sand, checks the engine oil level, coolant, lubrication, etc.

A large mainline road would have shop crews who do these chores, and the hostler may do nothing more than move the engine(s) around to the various service points.
