Time makes my memory a little rusty, but I believe the Palmetto was originally established as an all coach, all-stops daytime local on the upper half of the "Silver" trains' route. This provided in a heavily populated corridor a needed service at convenient times, and eliminated a time consuming service from the "Silver" trains.

All these benefits were disregarded in 1994 when mail and express became the focus instead of people. The current changes return the Palmetto back to its original purpose and its 1994 end points.

I don't know why Savannah is the Southern terminus. Logic would lead one to believe the extension to Jacksonville would increase traffic, but maybe the extra mileage would require more trainsets.

Now you're thinking, GREAT PR for Amtrack, I just wonder if CSX could possibly have as good of an idea of being a good corporate citizen as well? A good electrician can rig emergency power from a locomotive and last I looked a tank car could hold a lot of water for folks out of a house. Might even help them with their image[;)]

Oh, I know... it's so that Amtrak can try to sneak some of that expanding container-terminal business coming in through the port of Savann...

Oh, wait, they're quitting the M&E business...

Back to the old drawing board, as Clyde used to say...
