NJTransit Arrow IIIs Being Leased By Amtrak
Posted by alloboard on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 4:33 PM

Of all the years that NJTransit started operating 1983-present and I've known it since 1988. I recently discovered that Amtr leases an NJT Arrow III and runs it all the way from NYC to Washington DC. Why is this Type of unsusual operation carried out?

Way, way back in about 1984 or so I made a trip on Amtrak from suburban Washington, DC (can't recall the exact station) to New York Penn Station and rode all the way on a NJT car...it was Thanksgiving weekend and I purchased my ticket late so I had no choice on seating and was lucky to get a seat of any kind...some folks had to sit on their luggage as the train was SRO.  I recall it was a super rough ride up the NEC and I was NOT impressed with Amtrak at that point.  I've since had some nice rides on Amtrak and they have redeemed themselves in my mind (for the most part).

For years at Thanksgiving time Amtrak has leased some commuter cars and trains from the various local commuter agencies to help Amtrak cope with its holiday traffic surges - typically the biggest passenger loads of the year.  It's been quite a lot of fun for those local railfans who are 'into' which cars and which trains they're used on each year - several articles with the details have been published from time to time.  See for example: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?4,2594308
