Survey Says: the best railroad is . . . .
Posted by gabe on Monday, August 16, 2004 12:31 PM
About a week and a half ago, I posted "variant on favorite railway question." The design of the question is to see what railroad is the most interesting for railfans. As those of you who read it know, the caviate of the question is that the railroad cannot be one in which the respondent lives/or had lived by.

My thought is that most people's favorite railroad is influenced by their geography and sentimental attachments to it. Thus, I thought this question would focus solely on the allure of the railway and give some accurate answers.

I have compiled the numbers (excluding those who answered the question wrong by including a railroad that they lived near).

Well anyway, here are the preliminary results indicating what is in fact the most interesting railway to rail fans. I will continue to compile the numbers for another week or so and officially announce what is the most interesting railroad in the world (ok, I know that is a bit grandeos). So, please register your vote.

Results:

Rio Grande: 4
Milwaukee Road: 2
Baltimore and Ohio: 2
Santa Fe: 2
Burlington Northern: 2

There are about 12 other railroads that have received one vote. Please vote if you have not already so interesting railroads will not be given short shrift in such an "important survey."

OK. Railroads I like that wern't near my childhood home.
Pennsylvania Lines East
New Haven
Jersey Central
New York, Westchester and Boston
Sacramento Northern
Illinois Terminal.
Everything else ran by our house on Chicago's south side, and I worked for CNW and MILW, so that doesn't count either.

Not much of a survey with only 26 votes. Doesn't sound statistically significant to me...

Cast my vote for the late great Lehigh Valley RR.
