CSX Great Lakes Division Speed Increase
Posted by Junctionfan on Saturday, August 14, 2004 4:47 PM
Do you think that CSX should make it safe for their intermodals to go up to 70mph to reduce chance of conjestion. My logic is that if 4 trains going 50 or 60 mph on a double track mainline would result in a bottle neck but if say 2 intermodals traveling at 70mph passing the freights at 50 using long switches mind you, it result in less stopping time.

Seems like I remember reading something about the logic of running freights too prioritized causes adverse consequences in the overall system schedule? something about making room for the hotshot, potentially delaying other trains to keep them out of the way?

Running faster just to catch a slower train or to sit in line at a terminal or junction does nothing but waste fuel. The congestion points have to be improved to make things run more smoothly.

UP took the UPS contract away from BNSF by promising an expedited train from California to the East Coast which really loused up their system. It got so bad that they were trucking UPS to relieve congestion on the UP with their existing freight demand.

Anybody know what the existing situation is ?

If space wasn't an issue, I would build a triple track main with one line devoted to Intermodel. I know you have your EB's and WB's but with triple track, there shouldn't be a problem.

I look at UP's triple track in Nebraska and haven't heard anything bad as of yet. Is there a problem? With three tracks, you can have slower trains on the other two or one and run the faster ones without delays and hope that there are no signal problems or derailments. Just my 2 cents.
