Boyd

Can you give more detailed info on where to see the 261?

From Hennepin Ave. in Minneapolis turn north on Harrison St.  Go about two blocks; you will cross a railroad track.   Immediately to your right after crossing the tracks there is a large gravel lot.  The building housing 261 is in the northeast corner of that lot, which is the middle of a railroad wye.

The property is formerly the site of a major steam locomotive repair shop (Great Northern?).  The roundhouse is long gone, but if you view overhead photos, the foundations are apparent.

Can you give more detailed info on where to see the 261? The Minnesota Zephyr in Stillwater has been sitting for almost 3 years now. Line is sold to the state and will be turned into a trail. Train and building are for sale.

Also, most Saturday afternoons, there is someone around the shops working on Milwaukee 261 in North Minneapolis. I visited there in September and was treated to a roll out of the engine naked (without drivers) so they could have room to start installing the springs.

Need to see more info about the rebuild progress on this classic.

University Avenue Junction is the busiest spot that has easy access.

East Hoffman is great but you might have to show an ID to park in the little lot along Warner Road.

I just got up to, "The Cities", for CP's engineer class; I'm from Kansas City & don't know my way around yet. What are some good places to railfan/visit while I'm up here & how do you get there?
