In the past, some NY&LB trains terminated as South Amboy because that was the end of the catenary. In the first step of the project, the catenary was extended to Matawan around 1982. Some locals were then terminated at Matawan while through trains continued to change power at South Amboy.
I can't believe here were and still are Rahway locals, and used to think that all commuter trains terminated at Trenton until I discovered that some trains also terminate at Jersey Ave which was part of the Millstone branch. So then why are there Rahway locals and what track do they usually lay over at. If you hadn't giving me this info I would not have known that there are Rahway locals. I also learned that some NJT trains terminate at South Amboy or Matawan.
