I'm in Charleston a few times every year.. .

Best place (in my opinion) to watch trains in Charleston  is along East Bay in north Downtown. When I go there I stay at the Holiday Inn on Meeting Street and walk the 10 minutes to East Bay... walk north on East Bay from Meeting and you're  right  beside Norfolk Southern's yard and locomotive repair shop. If you head up  I26 out of Charleston toward the airport you will cross over the CSX yard...I've never gotten off there so I don't know how close you can get...but from the looks of it there should be several good spots. The CSX yard is easily visible from the highway.

One thing to keep in mind... BE CAREFUL. Charleston is a beautiful city with lots of nice people and attractions. BUT... once you get off the beaten path you can get into trouble (happened to me... which is why I mention it here).  Keep your wits about you and stay clear of people if you're out alone.

Going to Charleston, SC.  On work, I have a free day and a half to watch trains.  I'm told that, this is  Norfolk Southern country with heavy NS traffic.  Any go places to catch a few?

Thanks a bunch.
