Without first checking this GENERAL DISCUSSION forum, I just posted a message similar to yours, "NKP guy," about this NEW YORK TIMES article, but did it on the PASSENGER forum (you'll find it there, if you wish). Regardless, I too was enchanted by the story, and about the reported train trip. Delightful! Heart-warming, candid, true.

The family benefits of Amtrak travel

Today's (June 5, 2011) New York Times, in the Travel section, has a wonderful, full-page article written by a woman who recently traveled with her adult sons (22 & 26) from New York to San Francisco via Amtrak.

This article, not written from the usual railfan or parent-with-small-kids point of view, was less about the mechanics of the trip and more on how such travel can bring a parent closer to her (or his) adult children.  Their reactions to the train itself and their route across the country will bring a smile to the reader's face.

I really recommend this beautifully written article to you.  You can find it online at the New York Times for free.  It's entitle, "Mothers and Sons, on the Same Track" by Dominique Bowning.
