Remote Control Locomotives in So Cal

They are used by the UP here in Portland, Oregon.

UP uses remote control locomotives for yard switchers and some local work in Fresno, CA. and Bakersfield, CA.

Actually, when I visited, and had the chance to see cars being humped, they were pushing the cars over the hump using a remote control engine. It appeared that there was one worker operating the engine while he walked back and forth beside the train, pulling the levers to separate the cars as he went. I hope I was wrong in my observations, but if I wasn't it seems to me that's an awful lot for one person to be able to concentrate on safely...

I recall reading about these in Trains a while back, but I didn't realize they were being used in so many areas. BNSF Watson Yard (Carson), SD & IV (San Diego), BNSF (National City).

And those are just the few areas I've been able to check out recently...
