It looks to me like it's one of the EMD demo GP-59's with those rounded corners and prow front of the cab. Although it could be a GP-60 too.The demo 60's looked the same

Is it unique, or one of only a few?

I know it's a former EMD demo, and the corners were rounded to improve aerodynamics, but someone else will have to fill in the details.
