Actually it is closer to KK and Bay Street or KK and Beecher and yes that is Stowell Yard. That is the equipment I refer to. It has been in Milwaukee for years, I think at one time it was at the Reed Street Yard -- now I suppose you'll ask me where that was, and the area is so changed it is hard to describe. The book Milwaukee Road in its Home Town has some maps that explain all this but Reed Street yard was sort of directly south and across the river from the Post Office downtown.

Dave,
Where is the Stowell yard?

And have you seen the "dinner train" near south KK around Lincoln? Not a train that moves, but just some rather interesting old restored equipment sitting there.

From time to time locomotives have been shipped from the Port of Milwaukee - mostly for foreign destinations.
My own experience is that the UP switches the port -- known locally as Jones Island -- in the early to mid-morning, while I more often see the CP/Soo switch crew there in the afternoons and evenings. The small switcher owned by the sewerage district makes irregular runs (no pun intended) from time to time. The Miller Compressing engines are no longer on Jones Island but the grain elevator Alco is still active.
By the way the passenger cars and locomotive in the nearby Stowell Yard are evidently going to be sold to Kansas City museum so get your shots while you can/

Port of Milwaukee

Anyone familiar with the port of Milwaukee (WI)? If so I was wondering if anyone could help me better understand the rail presence in the port. Here goes:

How many trains arrive at the port of Milwaukee on a daily - weekly basis? What railroads service the port? What makes up the largest percentage of freight that comes and goes? Are there any transload facilities there? How big of a presence does intermodal have at the port? The containers that do arrive in Milwaukee, are they mostly for customers in the Milwaukee area, or is the port more or less a place to stage, store, and sort containers before their trip to Chicago?

And finally with Chicago, Rochelle, and Milwaukee all in close driving distances, if I was a customer or shipper, how would I decide on which port to service?

Thanks.
