Vacation descisions
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, July 14, 2004 3:12 PM
I am looking for some good spots in N. Illinois or the surrounding areas, within a couple hour drive, to take my son (6yo) to see some good action. We have been to Rochelle and all over the BNSF racetrack.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Volume: Elmhurst.

A change from what you've already seen: Joliet.

A little closer to you: Deval, Franklin Park

All of the above locations should be included there, with tips on how to get there, and how best to enjoy them. Enjoy!

Drive about forty five minutes to an hour north on I94 and you can get off and go about two mile east to Sturtevant, WI and see lots of action on the CP (ex-Milw. Road) main between Chicago and Milwaukee. A very quaint and old depot (still used by Amtrak) and usually a foamer or two around for conversation. Fast food near by (Arbys, etc.) and generally a good place to go, safe and enjoyable. Have fun.

I realize that you said you were looking for action, and this may be a silly suggestion, but have you been to the Illinois Railway Museum? A different experience to be sure, but still a fun day.

Actually, if you don't already have one, you should consider picking up a copy of the Guide to North American Railroad Hot Spots that Kalmbach publishes. You just happen to live in the part of the country with the greatest density of listings.
