Union Pacific in New York

Yesterday, while in Pulaski, NY, a CSX freight train came through that had a Union Pacific locomotive lashed between 2 CSX locomotive. This is the first Union Pacific loco that I have ever seen up here. Does anyone know if this is a common thing now days, or did I miss a chance at a rare photo?

At least over the last several months, seeing UP locomotives on CSX trains in central New York has not been at all uncommon. I've seen them on the main east west line in the DeWitt yards (Syracuse). I've figured they're probably run-through lashups. On the same subject, I've also noted a few BNSF units at DeWitt.

As recently as 2-3 weeks ago, there were about 6-8 UP engines @ the DeWitt yard on the tracks where the engines usually sit. I was wondering what is going on. My guess is that CSX had some of their power in for repairs????? Any answers anyone?

Saw two UP locos last summer on Fort Drum, obviously doing some local work, thus not run-through.

I think the 1st one is still @ the DeWitt Yard. I drove over The yard today via 481 and saw a UP with the flag on it sitting on a crossover behind a CSX.

Doubt it would have stayed in the area this long, but anything is possible.

csx needs power from any road it can get.I have seen up and Bnsf on csx and ns here in ohio.

And here in Lincoln, NE - CSX and UP are using the BNSF tracks more all the time. We hardly ever saw them in the past, but all of a sudden, they are all over the place. Occasional NS, but not as much!

Makes one wonder if perhaps we aren't moving slowly toward a national tollway rail system...

More likely it is just a lot of run-through power. I'm beginning to think that swapping out "their" engines for "our" engines is a measurable activity in that the railroads have found that it's cheaper to leave the power on than change it out.

CSX northbound through Evans Mills, NY this AM had 3 CN, 1 CSX on about 98 cars.

on KCS lines & CSX NS ex CR & BNSF on's line
ive been tryin to explain this to people who think its a NS,CN or BNSF train that its a KCS crew runnin the train and using other RR's power some people cant figure this out i even argued with 1 guy who thinks KCS is owned by BNSF & thinks UP

Where in NY State is Up the most prevalent? Like I said yesterday, the only one I have seen in the past 7-10 days is the one I saw as I was driving over the 481 bridge over the DeWitt yard. All the other one's I saw about 3 weeks ago are gone. I have noticed that there are about 3-4 CN GP's or SD's that help out in yard duties here in Syracuse. I have not been able to get close enough without actually going right down to the tracks where they park the engines to actaully get a good view and possible trouble with the CSX folks as those tracks are behind the scale bldg that is used for outbound intermod's.

I saw CSX, NS and Conrail engines in California years ago.

No problems Bigboy. Just that one you get used to seeing a certain railroad, one has to think 'Why them?' with them being UP or BNSF. Just Friday afternoon, the through freight heading west, I just happened to be on the passenger crossover in Minoa.... Lead engine was a CSX and 2nd engine was a BNSF Pumpkin unit. ANd earlier this afternoon, a eastbound I saw from the Wegman's lot in E.Syr, 1st 2 engines were UP and 3rd was CSX. And yesterday, there were 3-4 UP's in the yard doing more switching duty.

I'm gonna start looking out on the BNSF line here in BC for other companies power.

I don't usually check out those lines, but I've never seen power up here other than CN, CP, BNSF, BCR and SRY....

Perhaps there's a hang up for uncle pete to send his power this far up north -- I'd sure like to get a picture of it.

CSX trains on the old Georgia Railroad in Atlanta have UP power on their head ends. About 30 years ago in Waycross, GA, I saw a Frisco EMD on the head end of a freight. And when I was writing a piece for the Waycross Journal-Herald on an engineer school they were running, I met a Frisco employee who was taking the school. I tried to get in myself but couldn't make the road foreman of engines believe I was serious. That was before the term networking came into being and I didn't know I should have had my friend the Waycross shop superintendent and an engineer who was also a member of the Georgia Legislature go to bat for me. They showed the engineer candidates a film of a run from Waycros to Fitzgerald and while the locomotive was pulling slowly out of Waycross, a bag lady pulled her cart across the track not more than 20 feet from the engine. Cars zipped across just as close. I asked the teachers if they had actors do this and they laughed til tears ran down their cheeks. This happens every day, they said.

UP units show up here in the Binghamton NY quite often. Last week had two UP units on CP and have had units on NS trains. Even had a UP unit as a local train power.
We also get CN, CSX ,BNSF quite often.
The days of telling what railroad you are watching by looking at the locomotives are gone.

That's very true about days gone by. The one particular CSX/BNSF train I saw last week, had about 50% UP cars in tow. Also had a bunch of WC and CN cars as well. Train was mostly scrap steel/metal and trash. The UP cars were mostly reefer type cars w/ half being refridgerated.
