where to find a train's ID

I'm wondering where is a good place to look for a train's ID. Specifically BNSF in Minnesota. Is there a time table or schedule with these listed. I know it won't give the times of operation, but maybe it would give the ID. I have heard some ID's when the train calls Field Support in Ft. Worth (for BNSF) and reports work that they've done, but this doesn't happen often in my neck of the woods.

Any info would be apprciated. Thanks

I don't know if you can find much of that in a post 9/11 US. I know there's now way to track cars, but I don't know for sure on ID's. Maybe another member can bring that to light.

For CSX fans, there is bullsheet.com. There might be an equivalent for BNSF out there.

Do a little Googling - never know what you might find.

All railroads have their own unique train identification schemes. Those schemes are designed around things that the individual roads find relavent to both their operating personnel and to the computer systems.

Some such as CSX use Train Numbering and Date conventions.

Some use Origin - Destination identification conventions.

There are no uniform train identification conventions that apply universally to all the railroads in the US, or Canada for that matter.
