Alan, we have seen a bunch of Amtrak F40's in Amtk. paint in the Eola yards of BNSF over the past month or so, but nobody seems to know where they are going to. They had half full tanks and were all running.
They were on the "J" lead and some had open cab doors! Perhaps they are headed for Boston? Jim, Aurora, IL

Spotted another one of those slick-looking purple-and-silver F40 rebuilds(?) in the Chicago area yesterday (12/14/01). This one was standing all by its lonesome at noontime on the northbound Belt Railway track (facing north, too) just to the nothwest of Roosevelt Road and 25th Avenue in Broadview. Odd to see it sitting there with nothing coupled to either end - but it was about a mile south of the east-end connection of the Belt RR to UP's Proviso Yard, so maybe it was in transit to/from there. Couldn't see the unit # clearly enough on the black-painted back of it, nor the lettering on the cab end, so I'm not sure whose it was. Anybody know if this is one of the Boston/MBTA units? Sure is an attractive paintjob, whoever it belongs to!
