How true Jim,
Too many of us have forgotton what we are celebrating, not beer and concerts and firework shows, but sacrifice, often the ulitmate sacrifice.
The fireworks should remind all of us that this nation was born out of revolt, forged with the steel resolve that "We the people, in order to form a more perfect Union..."
Many of our sons and daughters, husbands and wives are away from home, on foreign soil, keeping that resolve.

So that we, the people of the United States, can sit home and watch fireworks, drink beer, chat on our computers, and enjoy the protection of that trememdous document.

Take a minute out of your hustle and bustle tomorrow, and think about what those words mean to you, and how many of us have died to create this nation, and, to keep you and yours free...

I was watching the History Channel yesterday. All day long was a series on the
American Revolution. It was presented very well, was very informative, and ed-
ucational (even for us "old timers").

And when one of the "enlightened" types (inside or outside) starts berating us, just remember why and how we got here, and that, WARTS AND ALL, there is no other country on earth that was founded on and still operates today on the precept that government should serve the people-not the other way-and that all people "are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed." High treason, don't you think????? Consider Franklin's admonition that "Gentlemen, if we do not hang together then we shall surely hang separately." That admonition is still true.

The thing that makes this country different is that we believe in the PURSUIT--we aren't perfect, but we work to solve the problems and recognize the process incorporates many dissenting views that are and should be respected. That's what, at the gut level, makes us Americans and not ________(fill in the blank with your specific interest group)-Americans.

When this grand 228-year experiment is over is when we quit remembering and acting upon the lessons and the sacrifices of those who put it on the line and gave it all so we could enjoy liberty, and we sink into self-serving, destructive disrespectful partisanship (for whatever pet cause).

Isn't it ironic that the enemies of freedom and our way of life prey upon us by cynically manipulating the very safeguards that were put there to ensure our liberties?
