"He never returned, no he never returned,
and his fate is still unlearned,
he may travel forever 'neath the streets of Boston,
he's the man who never returned."

Yes, the Kingston Trio, singing about a man who had no change to exit the system after a fare change requiring paying to exit as well as (or instead of) to enter.

Item 3 might be a little hopeful yet. The Victorian State government is now held by a party opposed to private control of the rail network. Freight Australia paid $A90 million for a 45 year lease on the Victorian network. The state government offered Rail America $A 2.00 in return for the rail track lease. (That's two, not two million). They are now trying to get a law introduced that makes it illegal to make a profit by selling track access rights to other operators - you can charge for access, as long as it only covers costs.
This was from the "Australian Financial Review", Monday 28 June.

Locomutt,

It my fading memory serves me right, it was the Kingston Trio.
