CP/NS news release.
Posted by BNSFNUT on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 3:44 PM
Regular readers will recall that I posted a link to the BLE659 page on a NS take over of the D&H,
Today the NS and CP anounced an agreement to run NS and CP trains on each others lines. This is subject to the STB approval. To read more go to NS or CP home pages.
Remember you heard it here first[:)]

There is no such thing as a bad day of railfanning. So many trains, so little time.

I doubt it,

CP runs trains on the line I work on. CP runs trains from Bensenville Yard in Chicago all the way to Terre Haute on the current CSX Woodland Sub and CE&D sub, it's well over 200 miles, and it is very difficult for those crews not to go on the law. Our dispatcher runs those almost as high priority as our Internmodal Trains, by the way, I should have been called for Q124 by now![C):-)]

I should clarify. Probably not a complete CP-NS merger, but rather an NS absorption of most of the D&H.

After rereading the release I figured out that any way you cut it some peaple lose their jobs. [:(] CP will likly as not need less crews and the yard peaple at Buffalo will bid jobs in the Binghamton yard pushing peaple on to the Extra board at best or the street at worst.

This is very interesting....

CP NS.... I had never really thought about that one.

Running on each others tracks will help CP gain a little on CN none-the-less.

I don't think a merger will ever happen, but if it did just think of the possible names for the combined railroad - Canada Southern, New Orleans & Northern, Icebox & Sunbelt RR, Palatka (FL) & Northwestern, etc. The possibilities are almost endless.

If there was to be a complete merger between the NS and CP, there wold be only one choice of name. It would be the Norfolk Southern.

CP (and the D&H before it) has had trackage rights on NS since the 70's (when the N&W's holding company, Dereco, owned the D&H). NS just started running runthroughs on the D&H after the CR split and NS power has been common on D&H/CP trains since the late 80's. My guess is NS will use these trackage rights and take over Guilford. We'll have to see what happens in five years.
