 beaulieu:

Accident happened shortly after 7am on Monday 9/13, first track reopened 7:25am this morning 9/14/10. Second track should reopen tonight sometime. Two trains detoured over the Soo Line.

Were there any all BNSF detours? How far out of route would doing so be?

I heard the UP Dispatcher giving out a warrant to a BNSF engine number this morning on the Milwaukee sub. Not sure if it was a detour or other situation, though.

Regards, Ed

News reported 31 cars but in actuality  there were only 6 cars derailed. Since they were double stackers they may have 3 or 5 units per "car". BNSF reported 5 cars derailed and the news reported 31. In addition, the news here in Minneapolis reported it as on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe. There is no such thing, the railroad and corporation are both now known as the letters BNSF. It is easier to spell!

IIRC the first derailed car was the eleventh. Ties were showing signs of a derailment for about 4 miles before the big pileup.  A bearing cap was found just before the first damaged tie, and a broken axle at the derailment site.

You would have to know exactly where at Yorkville the problem was. IR, now controlled by OmniTrax/Broe, is a mixed of owned, trackage rights and 99 yr lease w/ BNSF (Ex BN, nee CB&Q)

The derailment in Yorkville (2nd story) I think is actually on the Illinois Railnet trackage going from the BNSF in Montgomery to Ottawa and Streator.  It's ex-BN, I don't know if BNSF still own the actual line or if it is owned by IR.
