Just as an update, it appears that the East portal remained the same, albeit with a nice cleaning (And the loss of the ventilation system). I thought a short stretch was to be daylighted at this end, forcing its replacement?

And all the pictures of the West portal that I can find are on Trainorders and can't be seen full size. But it has an attractive portal that should be a popular photo background in the years to come just as its predecessor was.

About the only thing I don't like is I don't see the date of the project's completion cast into it anywhere. The old portals also lacked such a feature as well, it appears.

That must be one REALLY good telephoto lens to be able to see thru the entire 3,896' to the other portal!

I'm not really familiar with modern tunnel construction so maybe the tunnel portals will have a drastically difference appearance. But I hope it has a classic appearance with the name of the tunnel proudly displayed above the entrance.

The tunnel is on a pretty good westbound grade (2.2%). In fact, the crest of the grade is just behind the photographer. And yes, it's pretty much straight as an arrow.

Even with the grade, drainage was an issue before the tunnel was rehabiltated. The MRL is installing a new drainage system and will completely re-work the track through there.

I'm checking on the portals themselves, and I will report back.

.....I'm surprised there isn't a "hump" in it's interior for drainage....But possibly, the total length contains a slight grade in one direction.  It sure does look tangent thru that length.

Might Check today's TRAINS Newswire (8-19-2010)  Story on the Mullan Tunnel Project.

Says job is complete, except for removal of old ballast ( too much debris in it),

  and that MRL's MOW Dept will finish final work by October 2010

Will the completed project have classic portals at each end like the original did?

 

 Hard to tell of what they were constructed of, but I hoped something similar with the name emblazened above would be installed after construction ended.
