Signal aspects
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 3:54 PM
On my railfaning trips i sometimes run into a aspect that i have not seen anywhere else. Because i live in Kingston, I only see solid Green over Red, Yellow over Red, Red over Yellow. but other areas like alsen siding or other lines where there is New York Central-style signals or those old-school target signals i see blinking yellow, red over blinking yellow or blinking red over green. I've got fooled by the signal at Alsen it showed green over red, i waited for a while but there was no train so i went to the other contoled point to see if that signal was lit but it was not lit. Hmmm those signals the bottom signal is missing the green. but on other lines like the Hudson Line the green is there. is it that the Riverline is a freight-only line and the green is not needed on the bottom signal? also is Kingston's Contoled points will see an upgrade soon? those New York Central style signals look cool.

Signal aspects that are displayed at any given control point reflect the rules and speeds that apply on the territory beyond the signal and the speed of the switch being traversed, if any.

Signals can be of two varieties, constantly lit and approach lighted. Various railroads each had their theories of which was better and implemented their theories on their properties. Now that we are down to a minimum of class I railroads, those remaining roads are in the process of signaling their combined properties to common standards, a process that will take many years and millions of dollars.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

I would suggest getting a NORAC Rules book it shows all the different aspects you are likely to see in your area. Check the rules starting with Rule 280.
