Technology bites back
Posted by FJ and G on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 10:58 AM
This is the 6th time at work we had to call technicians in a week for our brand new copiers.

I cannot begin to tell you how many times banks are shut down because of computer malfunctions. And interestingly, the bank has the same # of tellers it did before getting computers.

My jeep once shut down because a small computer chip malfunctioned. It took 1 week for it to arrive from Toledo.

My VRE train very often gets delayed because of engine or signal malfunctions, much of it computer caused.Back to top

My digital camera decided that it didn't want to auto-focus anymore right before CP 2816 (steam engine!!!) showed up, so I TURNED IT OFF!!! When I turned it back on it behaved. [swg]

Daniel's three rules of technology (borrowed from various sources):
1.) If it's broken and you can't figure out what's wrong with it, then just leave it and it will probably fix itself
2.) If it ain't broke don't fix it
3.) The more they build it up, the more it breaks down

Not so sure technology is so bad, think about what you are typing on...

Consider how many of us were alive when 8 tracks came out, then cassettes, then CDs.
Remember LPs?
I still have a killer stero system.(just cant buy records anymore)
MP3 players, cell phones, your cable or satilite tv....

And consider this.

My Jeep 4 banger gets tuned up every 30,000. miles, my wifes new Durango finally needed a tune up, at 98,000 miles.

All because of a few simple fault code and on/off computer chips.

Her Durango, had it been built just 10 years ago, would be a gas hog, and need tune ups every 20,000 miles.

As it gets smaller, and better, you will start to take it for granted even more than you do now.

The storage capacity on your home computer is bigger, and better than the systems on the SST space shuttle.

And they went to the moon with slide rule technology!

There are times when you can over refine things, take the wrist watch calculator, sounded good, in reality, was a waste, no one could use it, because it was too small.

I, for one, am looking forward to things getting better and better, as odd as it sounds, we are living in the new industrial reveloution, the next ten years will be full of real surprises....

Every technology has its benefits and drawbacks. "Asleep at the switch" is, after all, a failure of a technology...

The question is whether or not the bugs are getting fixed.

When in doubt, reboot! Save often!

I need some playing tubes for my Edison Victrola....great technology...doesn't require any electronics.

My experience with copiers is that the computers only shut them down for mechanical malfunctions....and mechanically, copiers are a nightmare.

I love my truck... absolutly no technolgy. No radio, no power stearing, no power windows, no power locks, no A/C, and best of all no computer. I've have an ignition, a starter, an alternator, and 6 clyindars... doesn't get much simpler than that. If something goes wrong it's quite easy to fix. The only technolgy bitting me back is the will be if my heater fails.

TG3 LOOK ! LISTEN ! LIVE ! Remember the 3.

I have only driven old tech cars now for 9 years (points rule).
Remeber in the "old" days people always said "don't sit too close to the TV, it's bad for your eyes"? Now everyone sits very close to "the tube" on the computer and very little is warned about your eyes anymore?!?!?!?! Ever get headaches? If people were to only stare at the computer screen for the length of time that is safe for your eyes, everyone would become "unproductive".

Technoligy is like a bag of cookies or chips from the supermarket, doesn't realy taste very good ((too sweet or too salty)) but addictive anyways so you easily eat them all at once and then you feel sick, just like hi tech stuff.

I've got one of those, too -- a '70 Chevy C10 stepside. Bought it new... runs great[8D]! On the other hand, I usually drive a Honda Civic Hybrid, which is about as hi-tech as you can go in cars.

Do I like high technology? Not really... but by golly I'll use if for everything it can give me, just like any other tool. Take engines -- would anyone who works in the trade really rather run or fire a 1910 steam engine for a living, or a nice SD70MAC? I know which way I'd go, if I were earning my living that way...

Technology, like any tool, is still the servant of the guy (or gal!) using it...
