Standard gauge designs on narrow gauge

EF Vitoria a Minas in Brazil has long been noted for its use of North American standard gauge designs on meter gauge (DDM45, BB40-8, BB40-9W) and more recently for its re-trucked second-hand locomotives from the United States. This is all in addition to a roster which includes standard export designs.
What is the reason for the modification or conversion of 6-motor North American designs to 8-motor locomotives for meter gauge?
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
