Saw....

Montana Rail Link engine - #290 and SD2XR - that is quite a pedigree. He was coupled with #337 BNSF GP60B power unit. Hauling freight out of town.

Saw #8635 BNSF B40-8.

Saw NS # 9216 on a freight train.

Saw NREX #225 - not sure what railroad this is.

And....flapping hands around - saw AMTRAK - they are due in about 5 am - this was at 9:45 am! It was #185 and #180 - going east - with about 6 coaches and some freight. The best part was - I saw my first roadrailers!!!!!! The were on being hauled on the Amtrak!!!!! Pretty cool!

Had a cold nite on Friday nite and about 9 am - a whole train of empty car haulers went south. Along with a whole herd of what looked to be swifts.(birds) The bugs must have gone into the car haulers to stay warm and alive and as the train moved past us, the bugs flew out and - well, they make our diner look pretty pathetic! Those birds were pretty stuffed by the time that train went by - plus a lot of them kept following it - maybe they were foamers of another feather.

Also see some unusual "traffic". One young man - pulled around us to make a u-turn (crossing still closed). His car stalled, so after trying to turn it over a couple of times, got out , opened the trunk and dug around for a minute or two. Looked like he put two wires together (like a hotwire job) - the car started, he buried the items again and away he went. Any thoughts? I have seen them start under the hood, but never in the trunk! (the engine was in the front) Something new in old junkers?

They used to use weed burners on the rails years ago to keep the weeds down. What do they use now that I am sure fires are out of the question?

As for the weeds...Industrial strength Round-UP (monsanto) + Crop Oil + Surfactant (Detergent) sprayed from special train or Hi-rail tank truck. (The stuff makes the weeds grow too fast and starve itself to death)...nickname is "black thumb"!

I know some places are also using steam nowadays to fry the little buggers.
I don't think it lasts as long as the chemicals but it's definately more environmentally friendly.

Sorry Marty - fat fingers - SD40-2XR - but I too want to know what all the alphabet is?
