Attention 5 star individuals
Posted by Mookie on Monday, June 21, 2004 6:16 AM
OK - several of us have 5 stars.

Just to protect my standing in the family, I want to know who my real competitor is. I have never posted on anything but the Trains Magazine Forum. I know some of the rest of you post on Model Railroader and Classic Trains, etc. Is there anyone here with me at five stars that has not posted on another forum?

Therein will be my real "competitor".

Competitor [:0]

Oh no, the forum is a family not a competittion. We are here to help, advise, and share. On the Model Railroad forums people are always asking questions and other people are leaving answers (just like what happens in this forum) but these answers are to help with problems people might be having with their models, layouts, or related issues. A good example of the help that can be found in this forum, as you well know, is Nora's thread--that we refer to as the "Stupid Question Thread".

Many of our forum family members post in more than one thread. Try it, you'll like it.

Might I suggest that you stop by the Classic Trains forum and take my "Favorite Railroad Decade" poll. If you do, please leave comments. I am sure that everyone there would welcome you as you grace them with your presence. [;)]

Jim - I barely have time to do this forum. I would love to hit all the forums just for interest, but unless someone tells me there is something on the picture of the day, I don't even go there. I am constantly fighting time and work and a very slow puter.

That's why I said competitor - since I am at a distinct disadvantage - but not by choice!

I know I don't have 5 stars (yet) but I thought I'd reply to this.

Almost all of my posts are on the Model Railroader forum and only about 50 of my posts are/were off topic (like this!). I left the forums a couple months ago and just started to post again in the last month.

I haven't posted elsewhere. Of course I don't have five stars either. This post is one more small step in that direction though...

99% of my posts have been on this forum. My posts on the Classic Trains or the Model Railroader forums are as rare as a GE locomotive making a complete run without breaking down.[}:)]

Mookie,
Your not alone.
With one exception, I havent posted on any of the other forums...
Although I have never felt the need to compete for numbers, and I doubt you do either.
So your answer is yes, you have made the majority of postings and replies, and asked the most interesting questions...
After all, I doubt Wabash would wonder about "yellow thingies"[:D]
(and he still has the mirror somewhere, for back up moves...yeah, right)

Forums are not a competition to see how much drivel one can disseminate. I could care less about post count....it is post content that counts.

Pile'em up, pile'em up!!! Are you guys losing sight of reality???
How about more on Elesco vs. Worthington or Hamilton???
Or even just sightings!!!
Probably 50% of Mookie's postings are sheer chat-chat blather and could be shipped to another site.
Mookie, if you had any more time (2.62 postings per day!!!) you would over-algae this forum. The fish would die.
I know I'm about to be flamed but I remain your humble servant Tom Cat.

Pile em up, please...
Mookies postings and question are more than worth the disc space.
Funny, intelligent, silly and buried in choclate, much more interesting that the stuffy, narrow minded attitude that this forum should only be about a certain section or select members paticular version of subject.

The instant we decide to limit the quanity, quality and content of any posting here is the very instant this forum becomes no less than a copy of the rivet counters forum, where they argue the size, shape and count of rivets on a paticular hopper.
Nuts to that, this is a whole lot more fun.

So bring on the choclate cakes, uniheads, broom closets and yellow thingies, as much and as often as you can....

Fear not Mook - That tiara is certainly ready....

I always enjoy the musing of "da mook," since they usually generate lots of information, along with a laugh or two.

I occasionally post to other forums, but this one is my main focus.

Also CNJ pacifics on the head end of The Queen of the Valley in Reading's Outer Station exchanging baggage and mail. Elesco's up top.
And the 40mm dusters above us at LZ Uplift.
When those guys turned on the big light and levelled a forest we'd tuck are hands up under our ears and go to a peaceful sleep.

MizMoo, I'm upset that you "5 stars" are lording it over us lesser lights. It just isn't fair that some of you have more stars than others. I post as much as I can, and others, through no fault of their own, just don't seem to be able to make the grade. I am offended that some posters are rated higher than others; we should all be the same. Perhaps Mr. Bergie could decree that all the 5 stars must share some of their posting numbers with the rest of us. For instance, Gerrymack has been a member of this list almost as long as I have, but he has only one post! It isn't fair! This is America!

OK - I got my answers and thank you to all.

1: Ed is right - I don't care about 5 stars or 1 star. I would be just as happy if they just eliminated my stars. It is about generating conversation and you must agree, this posting did just that.

2: I am curious by nature and was just wondering if your stars are counted just on one forum or if all forums count toward the stars. I would check in on the other forums if I didn't have to work for a living and had a computer at home. So it may be a blessing or not that I am limited to this forum only.

3: I am female, older than 99% of all of you on the forum and very curious. That makes me much different than all the other 5 star people. So that alone sets me apart, if I really wanted to be set apart, which I don't.

4: I think Skeets said it best. I can hear him laughing all the way back here in Nebraska!

Yes Mook, but conversation simply for the sake of talking is not what this forum is all about. It is about TRAINS. You're free to do what you want, and the guys here really like you because you are so friendly and chatty, but I've noticed that a good portion of what you say has nothing to do with trains.

Personally, I try to keep most of my content on topic, but in the course of having a conversation I sometimes stray a little. I generally don't start topics, but try to provide answers to questions or just add my perspective to the topic. I actually come to this forum to learn, because prototype matters are not my area of expertise, though I do know some things. I am a modeler first.

There are only 5 of us so far that have 5 stars. You, Jim, Ed, me, and now Joe. I suspect that what prompted you to post this topic was seeing my posts per day. It is over 11. Yes that is a huge number, and yes, I did that in less than six months. By doing the math, yes, you are in danger of losing your status as the trains.com top poster. However, I have slowed way down recently, suffering from burnout, and a lack of decent topics to talk about on any of the forums. Beside, it's summer and I have been busy with other things. The modelers tend to be that way, but when we get back into fall, things will pick up. By the way, I am a stay at home dad, so I have a lot of time to read and reply to topics, especially when the kids are in school.

This star business has come up over on the MR forum a couple of times, and with disasterous results. I know this because I have been there and seen and been involved in it. It serves no useful purpose to discuss it, but somehow I feel compelled to respond. It is pretty hard to ignore when one member in a group of 5 says something. I know this isn't about Ed, he only posts here. Jim and Joe do most of their posting here, but some on MR. That leaves ME.

I'm not angry, just a little defensive of my participation and style here at trains.com. There are 6 forums here, not just one. Keep in mind that the magazine that started Kalmbach is Model Railroader, back in 1934. Trains Magazine was an after thought.[swg]

Those who say this isn't a competition are exactly right. It's about having fun, and maybe even meeting people with a common interest. For me, it is also about sharing my experience, especially my 35 years of modeling, with others. Once in a while, in the course of meeting people there will be some head butting. Differences of opinion or simply being unfamiliar with someone are often the cause. I'm not trying to butt heads, I'm just trying to explain who I am, and why I come here.

I hope this reply ends this discussion.

As the old saying goes - "All work and no play..."

Aside from the necessary taboos on politics and religion, a little off-topic stuff helps lighten things up from time to time. Where else can you discuss railroads, food, humor, and Mookie's sore eyebrows all in one forum? If I find a topic I'm not interested in, I ignore it. If everyone ignores it, it drops out of sight. The mix is what makes it as popular as it is. No room for purists here.

And as Nora's long-popular "Stupid Question Thread" proved - there is always something somebody doesn't know, and would like to learn.

Besides, it's funny how often even an off-topic discussion gets tied into railroading.

As for the stars - they are recognition for active posters, nothing more (which is where I suspect the other forums have run into trouble). Of course, you'll always find a few who will post for the sake of posting, but generally I find that the high posters have either been here for a long time, or have a lot to say, most of it worthwhile. We have a way of cooling off those who would post simply for the numbers. I hit 500 fairly quickly, but have been taking my time since. 1000 is still a long way off. And as time passes, we develop a sense of whose posts will be worth reading. All of our 5 star folks will generally warrant a look at their posts by me.

'Nuf Said. I'm headed over to the Diner for some pie.
