DHL Commercial

[Train Guy 3]

Has anyone seen that DHL commercial where the FedEx and UPS guys stop at the railroad crossing, then the train comes with all the DHL trucks on the flat cars. I could make out the JTTX on one of the flat cars but i can't make out what's on the locomotives. The locos are green and white. Can anyone tell what's on them?

Those are former Arizona & California units GP30s I believe, now owned by the Fillmore & Western Railway of Fillmore, CA.

On CSX we handle UPS trailers on our Intermodal trains as well, so as much as DHL wants to boast, UPS has been doing it for awhile.

I saw it locally sunday morning. Does this mean that DHL will ship intermodal trailers? Does anybody know what routes? With the recent controversy about trade marks, I wonder if UPS and Fedex gave DHL permission to use their trademarks in the commercial. Any body know how that works?

At one time DHL used to be a wholly owned subsidiary of Lufthansa German Airlines. They were spun off a few years ago, and have recently been on an acquisition binge buying up MANY small to medium sized trucking companies and airfreight companies across the USA, Canada, Latin America, Africa, and Asia, and merged them all together into one giant worldwide multi-modal goliath. They want to become a truly multi-modal powerhouse to compete head-to-head with both UPS and Fedex/Roadway around the world. They already ship by rail in Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa.
In this country, UP can't seem to handle any new traffic and some BNSF execs seem too timid of offending long-time sacred cow UPS to give DHL a truly comprehensive intermodal marketing/shipping plan. SMARTEN UP Fort Worth! Strike now while the iron is hot to get the business of a company whose execs have already demonstrated an affinity and friendliness towards rail (and whose top execs ALL APPROVED of that same commercial that you all like), and BNSF will be able to leave UP permanently behind in market share!

Ahhh... DHL, the enemy (to my employer "big brown")...

DHL's recent big acquisition is Airborne Express, which always used sub-contractor companies to actually run its delivery routes. (e.g. here in Milwaukeeland, we have Air One Express, Rowland Express, and RB Enterprises all running different delivery routes out of their terminal on 6th and Edgerton.) When DHL began to integrate ABX, its own employees were surprised to come to work one day to find that their employer had fired ALL of them in favor of the sub-contractor companies a la Airborne. Ouch! [:O][banghead]

Also, because of DHL's Deutschland ownership, ABX's airline had to be set up as a separate company with United States ownership...

Some of the Airborne vehicles have begun the transformation into DHL's new yellow-and-red livery from ABX's silver scheme. DHL used to be white-and-red with graphics portraying European destinations, e.g. "Spain", "Paris", etc.

DHL has been around for a while, but have always been a fourth- or fifth-ranked also-ran in the parcel industry. With the ABX merger, they have begun to really compete with the "big boys" FedEx (but I still liked "Federal Express" better) and UPS, so much so that I hear rumors of upper management being "really worried"... Awww... poor guys... [V]

DHL really hasn't done anything different than FedEx or UPS has in recent years. FedEx bought RPS (not Roadway, as stated above, Roadway just got bought by Yellow), Roberts Express, and Kinko's (now FedEx Ground/Home Delivery?, FedEx Custom Critical, and FedEx Kinko's repectively), while UPS bought Fritz Express (no new name that I've heard of) and Mail Boxes Etc. (now The UPS Store). The parcel industry is consolidating and expanding -- only slightly different from the railroads!
