CN - Old GTW - IC symbols
Posted by MP173 on Thursday, June 17, 2004 4:11 PM
Need a little help here. I am listening in on my scanner to the CN here in NW Indiana and need a little updating on the CN symbols. Many of the trains are the same from the old GTW days...such as trains 148/149, 270, 275, 392, etc, and I have a list from about 1999, but there are quite a few trains that I dont know about.

Is there a website with CN symbols?

Specifically, trains which I dont have origins/destinations are:
396, 535, 449,343, 119, 348,448,249,394

The old GTW seems to be pretty busy these days.

Thanks,

ed

From my Trackside Guide,
119 Chicago Winnipeg
249 Detroit Chi Winnipeg
343 Champaign IL. Winnipeg
348 Fond Du Lac Battle Creek
394 Montreal Richmond QC ( Don't think you would see this one)
396 Blue Island Toronto
448 Niagara Falls Toronto
449 Toronto Niagara Falls ( This one either)
535 Winnipeg East Selkirk ( Especially not this one!)
My Guide is a 2004 model so it's likely quite up to date but some times errors do creep in! They do not list IC train #'s so I have to assume that IC trains run under CN numbers.
The Trackside Guide is available from Bytown Railway Society Inc.
P.O. Box 141, Station A
Ottawa ON Canada K1N 8V1
No problem

Thanks for the info.

What exactly is the "Trackside Guide"? Is it primarily about the Canadian railroads? Is there a phone number to contact them?

Also, does it list the control points (CP) on the old GTW? A couple of years ago they put in CTC with new CP's.

I have been away from the hobby awhile and am catching up a bit.

regarding the trains symbols such as 394, 448, and 449...it is possible I heard incorrectly.

David...is the info on the CNRail website? or is it a publication?

Thanks to all.

The Trackside Guide is a compendium of information on all Canadian railroads including their U.S. subs.
It has locomotive rosters past and present, car info for commuter and passenger carriers, details of museum collections, maintenance of way stuff, regional and sub maps and details of each sub- division such as mileage, double track ,sidings, wyes and such.
Train numbers, passenger schedules, reporting marks and lots of other info. Also some info on U.S. lines near the border.
You can access their website at www.bytownrailwaysociety.ca or call (613) 745-1201(answering machine)

I am going to restart this thread if possible....

There are a few trains which are definately running on the CN, South Bend sub which after another week of listening to the scanner, I can confirm.

448/449 - I am wondering if this is a Markham - Battle Creek pair of trains? Today's 448 had an IC locomotive in the lead.

534/535 - Todays 535 had a CP unit in the lead. Could that be a CP train? Is CN running CP's trains between Detroit and Chicago?

393 is a mixed train with auto racks, box cars, and lots of tanks and cover hopper cars. I do not have a listing for origin/destination.

I have also heard a couple of 394's last week.

The South Bend sub continues to see a number of trains that run out of time. There were a couple this morning that had to get re-crewed. Is that a function of Chicago terminal congestion or what?

Thanks again for all the help and if anyone can point me to a specific website or conversation board for CN, I would appreciate it.

MP 173 here's what I have on those trains:

Q11991 / Intermodal / Chicago - Winnipeg

E24961 / Automotive / Detroit - Winnipeg

M34371 / Mainfest / Jackson,MS - Winnipeg

M34881/ Manifest / Fond du Lac - Toronto

M39331 / Manifest / Toronto - Proviso (UP)

M39491 / Manifest / Harvey(BNSF) - Toronto

M39671 / Mainfest / Memphis - Toronto

A44891 / Regional / Markham - Detroit

A44961 / Regional / Detroit - Markham

L53481 / Local / Green Bay - Neenah

L53581 / Local / Neenah - Green Bay

Those are the complete symbols but usually what is heard on the scanner are the first three numbers that are underlined.

MJ:

Thanks for the info.

Memphis...hmm you an old IC'er? I heard they closed Centralia down. Where are they going to classify those cars?

I am really interested in the whole CN/IC/WC integration and traffic flows. It looks as if now there are quite a few trains moving thru Chicago such as 348,396 etc.

Did 448/449 replace the 466/467 trains?

Are the only intermodals on the South Bend sub now the 148/149 pair?

Thanks for your help.
