How safe are the crews??

Friends,
I have no technical knowledge about the train, but always curious how safe the crews are in the crash incident? How easy or difficult they can find the way to escape from the cab? Do they, nowadays, really know ahead of time before the trains are going to have a head on collision? Any technology to keep the two trains separating at the minimum safe space all the time? I am writing this base on my experience reading the news about Thai trains accident that, from time to time, the engineers are killed from the accident. I have no doubt if lacking of the technology to alert the crew is one of the contributing factor. You don't see any fancy technology onboard even a radio to warn the crews. That's the options the State Railway of Thailand has to pay with it's crews life!
