I agree with Willie with regards to eastern roads no longer using specific power. In fact, I belive that CSX has sold all of its orange units. I can't help with CN, but I can tell you that CSX and NS use whatever is available. I have seen the GP38 series pretty often. However I have also seen, SD40's, SD40-2's, and ex Conrail C36-7's. I have also seen new units such as Dash 9's pulling a ballast train.

Conrail had some grey units marked "Ballast Express," but I believe that all of those have either been sold or repainted as well.

CSX is the only road of which I'm aware that earmarked motive power for M/W service with a separate number series and paint job. Customarily, older and less reliable power has been assigned to M/W service.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

They use whatever is available in the eastern region. Usually 4700-series GP38-2's becuase those populate the yards now, but I've seen 5300-series SD40-2W's toting a four-car propane train to refuel switch heaters!

No special sevice CN locomotives as far as I know, at least I've never seen one. Been dumping rock with IC GP40's lately and GTW GP38's on ribbon rail trains

Not sure what happens back east on the other side of the continental divide . But on CN out here on the west coast -- all I've seen are GP9u - 7000 series

Does CN use any specific locomotives for MOW service? If so what paint schem are they in? I Know that CSX has that orange and black MOW paint scheme. [:p]
derailment? what derailment? All reports of derailments are lies. Their are no derailments within a hundreed miles of here.
