In this month's issue of Leatherneck magazine (Jun04 magazine on newsstands about the Marine Corps), is an article on Saipan (during these D-Day celebration let us not forget that equally fierce fighting was taking place at the same time in the Pacific Theater.

(I know most WWII vets are probably long gone and I doubt there are many on this forum)

On pg 34 of the magazine is a photo of a narrow-gauge sugar cane locomotive, pulling a flatload car loaded with Marines and Seabees. The caption says that it was a Japanese sugarcan railroad that had somehow escaped the bombs. Marines of the 2d and 4th Engineer battalions and Seabees managed to get the train running to supply the infantry.

The photo is quite large and spectacular.
