Santa Barbara to Commerce is quite a trip. A couple of years ago we drove from Carpinteria (south of Santa Barbara by a few miles) to Fullerton and environs for dinner. We did other things on the way (including a couple of hours of train-watching at Fullerton), but the straight-shot back to Carpinteria got us in quite late at night. And all of this for a good Chicago-style hot dog in California!

You are accross the main from the new engine facilty near the top (north, TT east towards Fullerton)) end of Hobart Yard at Atlantic Ave.  (The platform area on 26th Street is old ATSF "Bandini"...sadly Ski Bandini  and Lever Bros. are no more...a common Johnny Carson punchline in there somewhere)

Most of the switch engines will be working about 2 miles south of you below the 710 freeway bridge. You may see a transfer run in there somewhere heading out to switch bow and arrow country at La Mirada, Buena Park, Santa Fe Springs, etc. (Pico Rivera has basically been mothballed as a switcher base of operations)...BNSF would be out of their minds to send 6-axle units into those areas. (designed for 4 axle units...light rail and tight curves)

Mudchicken Nothing is worth taking the risk of losing a life over. Come home tonight in the same condition that you left home this morning in. Safety begins with ME.... cinscocom-west
