Hi Herby,

I think that the place you are looking for is actually in Vancouver, WA just across the river from Portland. I can't remember for the life of me the name of the place! [:(!]

Anyway, I do know that it is at the SE corner of 8th and Jefferson in Vancouver. They have a bunch of passenger cars arranged around a building, each with its own (original?) interior design. Haven't been in the place....maybe this weekend. If I find the name, I'll let you know!

The restaurant in Vancouver has no domes. In Portland in 1978,I saw an ex Milwaukee RR.full length dome with a neon sign on it reading either Silver Garden or Pacific Garden( I don't remember which).Maybe this is the car you were thinking about?
Ride Amtrak. Cats Rule, Dogs Drool.

The car was a MILW full length dome. Resturant went bust and the car was removed. Don't know what happened to it.

The Crossing is a great steak place. If you can get to the North side of the place, you can see BN's trains going East from Vancouver since the restaurent is in the Y just a block or so from the depot. They have several cars from the Hill lines in their original colors - SPS, GN and NP. This place is not cheap.

Folks thank you so much for the quick answers.
I'll not be before early September in the Portland area (after returning from Canada from a trip with the Skeena) so there is some time left.
After some "mind searching" I guess that the note (or article) in TRAINS Magazine appeared sometimes BEFORE mid 1993.
Because during a visit to Portland in mid 1993 I did know about that Dome car, but had then only one day for this town.
My relatives did not know about this and so we went to the Organ Grinder somewhere in Portland.

A note about that visit in 1993 is:
Using the Coast Starlight from Albany,OR to Seatle,WA I was surprised to see a box car of RI (yes the "good ol'" Rock Island) in a freight yard. The guess however is that this time I have no luck to see a RI box (or any) car, despite all the trips with Amtrak this time. NOL to CHI / CHI to SLC / Reno to E'ville / Oakland to Albany, the before mentioned Skeena trip and back with Bus and (connecting) TALGO to (you guessed it) Portland,OR.

Herb ----

The Organ Grinder is also toast. No longer there.

I used to live in Wiesbaden and was in Frankfurt and Karlsruhe and showing my wife Baveria this past June. Darmstadt is a nice place, but Wiesbaden is better[:D][bow]

I don't think you should miss the Crossing - good place.

The restaurant in the MILW dome car was the "Silver .......". I've got somewhere around here a matchbook from the place. I went there in the early eightys, I believe. A friend and I ate in the dome (where else?). I remember thinking how difficult it was for the wait staff to move food down the narrow aisles. I think also the sun was a little to hot through the dome. I looked for it in later years to find it gone.

I believe there is going to be a GN dome car on this week's anniversary run of the Empire Builder -- watch for it (see today's trains newswire for info)
