Mook - you can't work for BNSF - you've said yourself that every time you get near it, the trains stop running!

Well, little sister, if you want to be an engineer these days, you have to be a conductor first. And by the time that happens, you'd have to think about retiring. I can't retire for another 5 1/2 years yet, but hope I have more time than that left in me.

I'm not up on my Railroad Retirement, forls...could Mookie be vested in five years or so?

I can just imagine watching trains and seeing Mookie in the cab of the engine through the window. That would be so cool. I'll bet you wouldn't follow the typical whistle code. You'd probably play a song on the horn.[8D] That's what I'd do![;)]

Brother Carl! You are too practical! Mookie has no patience, so must go straight to engineer.

And you won't find her in any vest, either!

Willy, there was once a guy on the WSOR, i've been told from a first hand witness, who, when he came to town with the throught train in whitewater, would play a different song every time he came to town with the horn. Weird huh!

Once I heard a train come through town with an engineer who really didn't know how to sound off grade crossing signals-he(or she-might have been Mookie-the BNSF has trackage rights thru here[:D]) was doing a short-short-long-short instead of a L-L-S-L!

What does KCS do, just stick new employees on a train and hope for the best?![:D][;)]

I live a short way from two major road crossings on the BNSF.
At night, the engineers, especially when its really late, will give two very short toots, then blow long only as long as the locomotive is occupying the crossing.
I stopped by the BNSF Hub, and asked a few of my friends why the "odd" horn works at these crossing.

Turns out it just simple courtesy, there are houses less than 100 feet from the main for about three blocks, (this is a older urban area) and they received several complaints about the standard crossing signal.

Because they have to blow the horn by law, they try, at late night at least, to keep it to a minimun.

Nothing offical, and if they get caught not blowing correctly, they could get pulled from service, but still, nice to know they bother to think about the older folks who live right beside the tracks.

And before anyone gets their panties in a wad, the sight lines for both of the crossings is fantastic, both are protected by stop lights(they are both tee intersections, when the signals go on, all lights both ways go red), with full gates that cover both lanes.

And so far as I have been able to hear, these are the only two crossing they do this at, and only the "older" hoggers do it.

Hey mookie limitedclear is right one can not get to the right hand seat unless you hire out as conductor and that takes about 5 years to get in the engine program. Rodney Beck conductor BNSF

If they don't blow correctly they could get pulled from service? That seems harsh. No matter how they blow the horn, they're still warning people that the train is coming. I don't think it should be about having a certain whistle code, I think it should be about warning people that a train is coming.

Willy - it is an infraction of the rules. However, if they pulled everyone out of service who didn't follow all the rules to the letter, you and I would have to help Ed run the railroads.

Willy,
It really depends on who catches you, and what they cacth you doing, or not doing.
f you have a trainmaster on you tail, not blowing correctly is a excuse to pull you out of service, after all, there is a real reason for the horn blowing, and the codes used are old, been around for a long time.

Every motorist in North America knows the tune engineers blow at crossings, and if the engineer fail to use it, and an accident occurs, that alone would be enough to sway a jury in a courtroom.

That said, of course we all "fail" to follow every rule all the time.
I pull pins with my foot every day, I get on and off moving equipment incorrectly every once in a while, and on occasion(big wink here) some of us do take naps on duty.

If they pulled us all out of service for every small rule infraction, there would be no one left to run the trains.

For the most part, management will turn a blind eye to such small infractions, (as long as the work gets done, and done quickly,) right up until something goes wrong, then you get charged with every little thing they can find, to apply as much pressure to you as possible.

Thats one of the parts of railroading you never hear about or read about in books and magazines.

If i'n not mistakesen, every RR emplyee for a Canadian Railroad has to be a Conductor before they can be an engineer.

Never, ever have i seen thm hire Engineers only, and in my mind, it seems to be a stupid practice..

why hire someone new when you can promote a conductor and replace that Job?

I agree Ed, You can't follow all of the rules all of the time, I know so little of the ones that are supposed to go on inside of the train, I dson't think were allowed uhhh... "company"... in the control cab.. but what the hell...

I'm going to look that up, I doubt we can hire Engineers direct, and If they can, i'll be a moneky uncle.

Some rules are just stupid.. like traveliing with all the doors closed.. why close them when you can have them open?

closing them eliminates the chances of people killing themselves..

Times have changed.

Growing up in the 70s, engineers I spoke to started as brakemen and with "smarts" and seniority became firemen, then on to engineers. Conductors also started as brakemen/switchmen and climbed that ladder. The conductor and engineer career ladders were basically two crafts that didn't "interlock" careerwise. Times really have changed!

I hope that the Class 1s continue to keep at least two people in the locomoitve cab!

"I like my Pullman Standards & Budds in Stainless Steel flavors, thank you!"
