It's six miles from my house to the nearest substation, and most of it is solid limestone, often at the surface - very slow going, and a pain to install new services.... We replaced around 10,000 poles in the aftermath of Ice Storm '98. I'm sure it was far cheaper to replace the poles than to do all of the trenching...
