What year did CP retire their alcos? I saw a photo taken in 1996 with a like C424 or something like that on a double stack train.

CP and CN both retired the remnants of their MLW (Canadian Alco) fleets by 1999. Most of the survivors disappeared in 1997-1998.

By that point they had been concentrated in territories where shop forces knew how to keep MLW's on the road, the best example being CN's diesel shop in Moncton, which closed shortly after the retirement of CN's last MLW power and was sold to a contractor who does business doing - among other things - maintenance on MLW's. The more things change, the more they stay the same...

There is thumb of thought here as CN Rail pulled out MLW canadaian
Alco,s out of storage or the locomotive closet durring the strike as saw two in
Saint John with a GMD-1.I know that NB East Coast in the North Western part
of New Brunswick operates MLW locomotives RS-18 and 424 class.they are
not all in good shape but NBEC is rebuilding there RS-18,s into a hyper MLW
which can pull as if a engine and half.Alcos are long from dead in Canada.

CP retired all remaining MLWs in 1997. The remaining units were RS-18us and C424s by then, based from the roundhouse at St. Luc in Montreal.

Excuse me? MLW's on CN during the last strike? I think you mistook something else for an MLW, as I'm pretty certain that CN's MLW power was not only retired, but has been gone from the property for several years.

I don't know.. I still see an Alco here and there mooching around in the CP Montreal yards..

don't get me wrong, they never go anywhere, but they do do the odd pu***his car, and pull that car etc...

There are a few rusting away in the weeds at Mt. Vernon, IL at NRC (Old Precision National/ C&EI Shops) along with some large Australian cousins..

The Ottawa Central has (had) several ex CP Alcos. That's a short line in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada .
