question regarding a friend...
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, May 3, 2004 11:03 PM
I have a friend that lived in romania her whole life. One day in conversation, it came up that i am a train fan. She said she has never been on an american train before and wants ever so badly to go. (unfortunatley, amtrak is not the best passenger service ever had in the world, but i got to work with what i got). My question is what kind of trip does a non-train fan enjoy? Most of us rail buffs can sit for literally hours on end and enjoy the ride, but what about our 'regular' friends? Should we take a half hour long trip so she won't be bored? Or do we take a day long trip to fully enjoy the ride?[sigh]

has anyone had this problem before? can anyone help?I love to impress my friends with trains and this is a perfect chance, i just dont want to blow it...

Depends on where you are at.....There is a broad scattering of folks on this board that could chip in with comments if they knew "just a little more"......

Trip to the mountains...Trip to the city.....Trip sandwiched by an "event".....Put on train at one end, pick up at other and return...Dinner train...tourist train....???

people person?

I took my parents on the Alaska Rail Road from Anchorage to Fairbanks. The scenery was first class and the crew was friendly and knowledgeable. My father who had traveled by train in his youth had it bring back memories of traveling from Seattle to Chicago. I am sure you can find good rail service in Europe and the scenery in the Alps is wonderful. I am sure there are some great runs in Canada too. It all depends what you are looking for.
