Larry,

Thanks for the info. I also found the column, Markers, in R & R-one of the issues with the development of the E unit articles by Preston Cook.

It suggests the TomTom XL 330. Says that it shows abandoned ROW, rail-trails, etc. Have to compare prices to see if there is any premium for this additional info. It also mentioned using the Delorme Atlas in conjunction with the GPS.

I have a Garmin, basic model - monochrome display.  What else I have is the DeLorme Atlas for my laptop, which will take a feed from my GPS with the appropriate cable.  I still haven't played with all of the features in DeLorme...

For driving railfanning, this isn't a bad set-up, although you might need an inverter to keep the laptop running for more than a couple of hours (your battery life may vary).

It wouldn't be a good set-up for hiking through the woods, though.

I don't remember the article in Trains.

Best GPS system for railfanning?

I am considering buying a GPS system. I remember reading in either Trains or R&R about one system having better images of railroads. Do any of you remember which system this was?

Is there any that you have found that may be better?

Thanks.
