Save a GMD1
Posted by enr2099 on Sunday, May 2, 2004 10:17 PM
The E&N Division of the Canadian Railroad Historical Association is looking at preserving a GMD1. From 1958 to 1990 Canadian National used GMD1's, built between 1958 and 1960 for Canadian National(some were also leased to the Northern Alberta Railway), on its Cowichan and Tidewater Subdivisions on Vancouver Island.

CN 1423 was working Gordon Yard in Moncton, NB on 17 April 2004. Still gettin' the job done after 46 years.

I still see some in use on the CNR, nice propotional engine and adds a bit of variety. The ones I see are 4 axle, I would imagine you want the A1A-A1A types.

Mudchicken Nothing is worth taking the risk of losing a life over. Come home tonight in the same condition that you left home this morning in. Safety begins with ME.... cinscocom-west

1423 was one of the GMD1's we had originally tried to aquire from CN as it pulled the last official run on Vancouver Island. However, CN turned us down as the unit is still in service.

While it would be nice to aquire a GMD1 with A1A trucks, that's not possible, as the last remaining A1A-A1A GMD1's (CN 1600 series) were retrucked in 1998, 99, and 2000 and are now B-B, and renumbered in the 1400's.

There are at least 2 GMD1's still working in the yards in Melville, Saskatchewan. It's good to see that there are people out there trying to preserve one. I wi***hem the best of luck!

Nice to see things are clicking away on the E&N, like I've said before, that's an ideal run for tourists during the summer months.

I know I'd be making my way out there.
