Getting ready to shove empties across the four lane one day. Had the bottom car ten feet clear of the road. Had one lane of traffic stopped, then had my engineer slowly start shoving across. Well this jackass in a pickup is fastly approaching, my train crawling. There I am standing there flagging this *** down, he sees the train coming, and acts like he's gonna hit me. He swerved at the last second. Only came 10 feet from me and the train, but that thick ,goowy substance that was hocked from the deepest, darkest corner of my nasel cavity didn't miss his bedside. Hope he found it cause was a good one.

Ok well I have a similar story-

I suppose in the great white north, we don't use Rocks-they damage we use!

Frosty's head! A.k.a. Snowballs.

When i was 8 or 9, we used to down to the tracks aswell and round up snowballs get them ready and when a train went by, points were awarded for most hit, snowballs are better because they are softer and they levae a mark!

Thge tanks cars were worth 25 points, and everyhting else was down from there.

So hear begins story 1

one day, a freight train was passing by, and we started chuckiung and chucking, anywas one Car (box car) hasd the side door open and the snowball went Astray.. and straight inside. Next thing we heard was a weird OWW! and out to the edge of the c a hobo appeared and sent us off with the finger, the snow entwined in his hair etc...

Heres story #2

The DT train, that picks up the freight cars from the local buisness moves at a really slow pase, often 3 crew memebers. One day we started wailing the snow balls at the cars, and the conductor of the locomotive stepped out, and he got belted with a snowball, and started yelling obsecene things. Well-heres the funny part- anyone knows that a Train like that has 3 memebers, 2 up front and one in a caboose.. so we were laughing really hard at his misfortune, out comes the guy from the caboose with 2 snowballs, then he yells "SURPRISE!" and throws them at each of us..

Yeah, we learned that day.

I think we all did that at age 8 or 9 as well. My friend Peter and I are walking east on the CGW trestle over the Fox River in St. Charles, IL. We are about two-thirds of the way across when we here a horn. It's coming from a WEST-bound freight! Here's the dilemma: do we head back West or continue East ? It's a single track and straight, so we can't judge the speed of the train. We decide to hightail it East.
We get to the end of the bridge with about 75 feet to spare! Needless to say, I Never walked on that bridge again!

I don't think there are too many of us who can say they never threw rocks at train cars. I did the same thing when I was 8. Standing there obliviously chunking rocks, that is until the caboose came by with the conductor sticking his head out the window yelling at me. Scared me straight. Funny how the tables have turned, now I'm the one yelling.

OK time to tell MY story from the OTHER side of the tracks....

When I was little I was one of those kids who would stand by the tracks and practice the age old art of throwing rocks at the passing boxcars...granted this is when I was about 8 or 9.

Well one day me and my buddy were on a scavanging hike (for spikes) along the ROW, on the way back, we were passed by a fast freight train so se did what nature intended for us kids to do and we started chucking rocks and listening to the clunk of the stones bouncing off the steel sidewalls.

Well while we were throwing, a gondola rolls past and much to our surprise theres a guy riding in it with a walkie-talkie. He looks at us and starts yelling into it, next thing we know the whole damn train starts to stop! Well needless to say we freaked, and then ran like the blazes. Too late, the guy in the gondola was already after us, caught us, and then starts to read us the riot act!

Turns out that some of the cars on that train were some auto carriers, this was back around '70 so they still had open sides, no shields, and they had had alot of problems with autos recieving vandalism (some dents and broken windows from hoodlums like us eight year olds!, but mostly break-ins for radios).

After an inspection of the autos it was determined that we had not damaged any of the shiny new Buicks, I could have told them that, it was boxcars we aimed for! So after a healthy chewing out by the bulls they let us go with a stern warning and handed us back what was left of our rears that they hadnt chewed off! . I never went back to that ROW for anymore scavaging hikes, we moved soon after but it still hurts to sit down when I think about it!

Once we finish switching duties for the day, it's an average 8 mile shove back to a small CSX yard. When there so few cars that the horn blast is loud enough for the en-stein drivers to hear we still go pretty slow over crossings. I'll dang near have my engineer stop when there are so many cars that I can't hear the horn blast.
Any ways, today this brain surgen driving a company truck for a local building supply store goes warp speed over a crossing with crossbucks and stop signs on both sides. I was on the point and about 4 cars away from the crossing. Meanwhile, the engineer is waking up the dead as usual with glass breaking thunderous horn blasts. So there was no denying that were were coming. This mush brain driver never once looked our way or acknowledged the stop sign.
A phone call was made to his boss, who I'm sure will be proud of the highly intelligent driver who doesn't stop at stop signs, and puts my life in danger. Hopefully action will be taken but I doubt it. All I can say is his boss better say something before I do, cause my size 13s are really chattery.

Very interesting.
I heard stories of dumb kids in my city who would go to Montreal West station, wait on the tracks, and get off just before the train came....often accompanied with an airhorn blast. Since it's just past a curve in one direction it's especially dangerous.

There was a summer when that stretch of track (the "Westmount Subdivision") had a slow order on it because some hooligans were cutting holes in the fences to cross. Really, is that smart? I think they did start sending in the bulls. And good....the kids should be thankful...however long it is in Juvie is a bargain compared to being killed!

And on one occasion when I was riding the Blainville train to Windsor (now Lucien-L'Allier), a bunch of idiots were throwing stones at the train I was on, just before Montreal West. Of course that train didn't stop there then....the kids probably knew that....because they wouldn't want to be near any irate passengers. Those rocks are loud when they hit the windows. Sadly, I don't think anyone stopped them, but I would be happy if they did!

Jen is 100% right, People don't like to wait for thigns anymore, everyone is so damn impatient these days.

Heres one for the record. Heard this one from a friend of mine.

One day they went around replacing all of the black things on the search light signals, because they were worn and the sun had faded them.. (they are very circular) well on the south track a Passenger train was heading their way, Most signals are around corssings, so the gates were down.

This guy in a mercedees S class couldn't be bothered to wait, kept honking at everyone, and before the train came arcross the corssing, the S class proceeded very slowoly and crossed, But was moving acceptionally slow, almsot to prove a point that he wa sbetter then the train.

Well the maintencae crew took acception, And threw the signal reflector, or refractor almsot as a frisbee in no particular direction. it caught the wind, changed sirection a few times, and started curving around like a bommerang, it glided along side the car (without touching it) From trunk to passenger door until it hit the passnegr door mirror,a nd took it right off, almsot with no effort. as that ahppened the the signal refractor continued curving and went straight into a long grass farmers field, right beside the tracks.

The driver had not seen the signal bit, he just abruptly stopped his car, got out, looked back.. to see if he had struck any telephone poles, Got out picked up his mirror, put it in his car and drove off.

and to add insult to i jury, it was one of those Mirrors with the Flights on them ti indicate he's turning..

I thought that was particuallry amusing.

I'll think of mroe because i have a ton stashed away, there is no shortage of idiotic behavior trust me!

Without getting into a major shouting match over this - I am sure this type of thing happened when their were chariots, and horses/buggys. However, we are a fast-oriented society. We have no patience with waiting for our puter to boot, have to have fast food, since we can't wait for a roast to cook a couple of hours, have to have a phone in our ears 24/7 in case someone in our circle of acquaintences breathes!

So why would we show any patience waiting for a train to use the crossing? The only solution is to have each train stop at each crossing and wait for the people to cross and then if necessary, cut the train to permit the next one through. Or people will still be injured and killed if we don't!

Sometimes I wonder myself just how stupid people realy are! now a days. every time I go railfanning eather In mo valley or fremont,neb or just about anywere on the UP or BNSF system you guys are right, I have seen so much stupid crap that I just don't care no more.......
I mean If someone just can't wait a few minutes for a train to pass then they should't be driving at all.
As for the inalessent children playing chicken on the train tracks, I can now see why the railroads are having a hard time trying to teach the brainless brain dead public about railroad safety today. "no one cares any more", which is a bad way for an attatude nowadays. If some damn kid gets killed by a train BECAUSE MOMMY AND DADY didn't show their braindeaf child that playing on or near a railline is NOT A PLAYGROUND!
these train crews see this (for better words)crap every day......no wonder why train crews do or don't like their jobs so much anymore.,and one more thing.....as a railfan....I have noticed that women in partictuler HAVE A BAD ATTATUDE when it comes to driving,and at railroad grade crossings I see alot of women drivers always go around the crossing gates when a train aproches.to this I must say to all of you who work for the railroad,I stand behind you 100%. i know an engineer that did stop his train and chase down some kids playing chick.... he only had light units...and it was in small town..with a 10mph speed restriction on the tracks over the crossings.... as he was approching the crossings...some kids where standing thier...right in the middle of the tracks.... he blew the horn..but they didnt move..as he got closer they still stood thier.... at the last min..they moved...but it was to late..he dumped the air..and took off out the door....with the conductor just sitting thier stunded.... he went off chaseing them down the tracks..and cought 2 of them..and started to give them an ear full for being stupid....
the greates part is....across the tracks on a side streed..thier was a local cop that sat and watched it all happen.... after the engineer cought the 2 kids...the cop came over and arrested the kids.... hahahahah.... the one said to the engineer...i get a a rush out of doing that...just as the cop was putting the cuffs on him...lol

Oh, that's good, CSX98, I know a guy who put a lit fusee in a back seat under similar circumstances one night, made me think of it when I read your post, this guy was known for being a little bit nuts, anyway, and he never heard anything about it. No, I'm not trying to play one-upmanship, this really did happen.

The same guy later got into a lot of trouble when he jumped off an engine and chased down a kid who called him an "old man" while he was working a branchline local. Chased him down and got him into a headlock, and asked him who was he calling old NOW?

Also had a student engineer one day when we had kids playing chicken. I told him to grab up some water bottles and dump some water on them. We were running about 35 MPH when he went out onto the shorthood end and heaved three or four full water bottles their way. I was S-O-O-O grateful he didn't hit anyone but he was really throwing them and they were breaking out, exploding on the street. To make it worse, these were over busy suburban crossings and people were watching us go by. I about flipped.

When he came back in, I asked him what the heck he was doing. He said he heard me say throw some water bottles at them, didn't know I meant to throw water at them sans bottle. I can still see him out there throwing those bottles.

this one was told to me what a conductor did when he had to flag a road crossing one night.....
one night...the crew was giveing a stop and flag a road crossing... well..the train stoped ..the conductor got down on the grownd...with a flag....he got traffic stopped...and told the train to proseed.....well...just as the train was about to start over the crossing..some *** in a van came blasting over the crossing..igorning the condutors stop......well...this conductor got pissed..and through the flag at the van as it went wipping by..just missing him in the prosses..... the flag hit the back window of the van ...busting it right out of the van....the driver never did stop.... but im sure he had to pay a nice chunk of change to have a new window installed at some point in the future....

My conductor ran out the front of the engine to yell at him, we were only going 8 or 10 MPH, and probably could've stopped. When my conductor got on the front of the engine, the individual picked up a large piece of wood that looked like a tiebutt end and heaved it at the engine, missing the conductor but getting our attention.

Neat trick, blaze! Amazing how much of a hurry some folks are in, isn't it? I recall one years ago -- didn't have to do anything. Slow freight (between the local speed limit and one dead GP9...), two railroad crossings... I was in the buggy and up ahead saw a guy in the line of traffic make a U-turn and hare off in the direction of the next crossing. Finally got to the next crossing and... there he was... about three cars back in the line. Damn near fell of the seat laughing.

Last year about the last of August I guess, we were interchanging some empty covered hoppers back to CSX. The interchange track only holds 9 cars so I have to split the BUSY 4 lane highway and drag the rest across and tie em up. Well, this day there were about 12 or 13 cars, so I lign the switch, remove the derail, and start stopping traffic. Meanwhile, I got the train backing towards the highway. This is always the exciting part, you're standing there in the middle of a 4 lane by yourself, trying to get these idiots to stop and the bottom car is approaching.
Fastfoward, we get em all stopped and I get up and ride the bottom, and stop 1/2 car short of the next crossing. Go in 3 step start tying hand brakes. I can already hear horns blowing as I walk the 9 cars to a cut. After I get to the cut point I can see traffic backed up half a mile. Release 3 ahead 3. We clear the crossing yet some *** clown is still blowing the horn. My engineer usually gets down and turns the air so I can bust it. Well it being a hot dry day and lots of gravel and debris at the edge of the crossing, it was only fair that the yokl sitting in traffic blowing at me get a nice gust of dusty air and gravel blown through his window. Hey it was only fair.
