New Forum Rules..ala the Doctor
Posted by dharmon on Friday, April 23, 2004 6:14 PM
Doctor Suess that is.........

While I play within this forum
I will abide by this decorum.
I will not bicker, bully or flame
nor will I call anyone a name.
Presidents I won't malign
Nor ask Congress to realign (Amtrak).
I can a discuss train, unless bombed in Spain
from that I will refrain.
Hockey, beer and pizza is too,
So is mentioning the names of you know who (M&M).
Other topics are no no's unless kept rational,
this includes Alco, GE, EMD and Canadian National (vice CN).
No Rule G, boozing or Ricky Gates,
Marge Schott, Super Bowl or union vs. management debates.
Follow the rules, I'll try hard,
So Bergie won't give me a yellow card.

Score one for Dr. Suess.
Sometimes these posts start running loose.
May we find rhymes from Mother Goose.
I'd better quit before I lose my caboose.

Nicely done, dharmon. [:)]

Sometimes I wish we all lived in the same community and met at the local greasy spoon every Saturday morning to shoot the bull in person. Then everyone would be able to hear my chuckle after hearing dharmon recite this rhyme in person. Plus, you'd all be able to find out that I'm not the rain on the parade guy that this forum often brands me as. Hopefully, we'll have a Trains.com roundup someday so more of us can get to know one another.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Yeah. Yeah, Yeah !!!
But George is our President and we oughta back 'im. Every time he speaks, I can think of all the the History and Problems of Democracy teachers I've known in school. Any one of them, regardless of accent, could've sent George to the dunce seat in a minute !!!
Policy Puppet?

An earlier thead started with an accusion that the President of The United States of commited a crime. It was pure speculation and completely out of line.

Somtimes politics is relevant and should be discussed, but lets stick to facts not wild theories.

I would rather discuss railroads and model trains with another member than get in a flame war over things we will never agree on.

Incidentally, the person who posted the "offensive" message has posted a number of very good messages, starting good discussions and/or containing good useful information

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.

Yes it is, it is very creative. It shows a high degree of intelligence. Even though it is dealing with "bad" things it was done in a positive and joking way. That is also my style. It is much better to think and be positive than the alternative. And don't think for a minute that other forum readers don't pick up on who is "cool" and who is being a jerk. Now we all can't be Dr. Suess, Ed Blysard, Mr. Hemphill, Bergie, Kathi Kube, or a Nobel Peace Prize winner, but we all can at least try to be civil in the forums. I know this will be a real change for some, but hey, CHANGE can be good. Try It , You'll Like It. Now turn turn that [:(!] into [:D] . Now, doesn't that feel better already. [:D] [;)] [:p] [8D] [:)]

Cool poem. I think we can all follow those rules if we want, but I don't think that it is going to happen.

You really should get some kind of an award or prize for that poem! We need to consult Bergie and maybe he'll give in and give you an extra star or some kind of an award!

No! I disagree. If you don't have personalities you have a very dry and uninteresting forum!

Everyone has something to offer. And it is their personality that adds to the reading pleasure or displeasure. What we need to maintain is decorum. You can disagree 100% but you have to do it like ladies and gentlemen. (otherwise you just lose the subject in a delete/lockup.)

There should be a healthy cross section of opinions. Why would you want to read only one point of view all the time! I personally can't wade through the long-winded political discussions or the techno-geek explanations. That is why I do "Yellow Thingies". But I do learn and I do try to inform a little. I wouldn't know the first thing about the inside of an engine or how to even move a train an inch - but I still have a great fondness for everything about trains.

Agree or disagree - you can always learn something. You don't like the term Moron - don't read the thread. Like the TV - you can always change the channel. Don't make this into a politically correct, religious right, only correct people may apply forum. Throw a small pebble or two, just don't throw boulders!

There, now we disagreed and no one even had to use a band-aid!

I like that suggestion- Principles Vs. Personalities.

Can anyone tell i'm being very Sarcastic? Well, I was.

Anytone who has any experience working for any Railroad will know, that absolutely no one will disagree with you like a "lady" or a "gentleman" there is a lot of swearing, name calling, And even at the point where everyhting is allowed in this forum, I would still say that this forum is NOT an accurate reflection of RR life; Everyhting is dulled down and said more politely as it is.

Trust me, A REAL RAILRAOD discussions are rated about PG-961, in accordance with the video rating system.

So, we all want to take a sight, that has some PG-13 discussion and Dumb that down to G? What are we then left talking about? What RR ties are made of, the actual Iron content in the Rails, Why Santa claus didn't visit my house.. etc..

No contreversy, No progression. It is as simple as that.

Ever left the brakes on a locomotive then put it notch 8? how far do you progress?

No progression whatsoever, and you **** alot of people off because you've just grinded up the rails.

I can't help but notice that most of the Railroaders are object to this rules, while people who don't spend much time with RR staff don't really know how it works.

I think Wabash or CSXEnginner will tell you how often they have Uncivilized to say the best, conversation with other RR employees.

I'm betting a few times a month. maybe even on a weekly basis?

When you work for an RR, you develop a Vey thick outter shell, That lets nothing by- Someone calls you a name, you don't sit around a mope about it for several hours,. you suck it in, and continue your line of duty.

I know I have a yelling match with several CP breakman every month, Heck when someone blinds our train crew with there lights on their train when they are heading right towards us (double track), it's a race who can get to the radio first, and tell them exactly where they can shove thier train.

I think we otaa stop looking at the world through Rosey coloured Glasses, and embrace it as the cruel place it really is, Rather then sheild ourselves. Can't handle it hear? man, you can't handel the real world!

...This is not the gutter as far as relating to each other....Surely we can discuss the topic on here using a civil tongue back and forth to each other. It doesn't have to be lily white in every passage but just civil. We're all not railroaders by trade on here just many of us have an interest...many a life long interest in the subject and enjoy just relating and discussing the subject. Surely we can do that together without "flaming" as some call it....and letting it get out of control.

Kevin - my Dad was a railroader for 40 years. He didn't have to resort to ugly language and yelling to get his point across. He was a gentleman and according to all his peers, a very good engineer. They all liked to work for and with him. They told me; he never would have said anything! He didn't want me to work for the railroad because they were so rough and tumble and the language so bad. So no surprises there.

But like Modelcar - I think we can be civilized - we aren't on the railroad here - we are in what should be a fun, interesting and informative forum. Remember, we are dealing with the world here, not just a local pool hall group.

Mookie & Kevin & Modelcar and co -- neat thread. Thanks for the thoughts! I think the key is in Mookie's comment about ladies and gentlemen -- but at the same time I agree with Kevin. How can that be? Because being defined as a lady or gentleman isn't a matter of the language they use (I have heard some really impressive vocabulary from some real gentlemen -- and ladies -- in my time, believe me!) but by their consideration for others and their care for facts. We don't have a problem here -- I read most of the posts on most of the threads -- and 99.99 percent are just great. Once in a while someone gets carried away, but it usually gets straightened out pretty quickly.

Addendum to the rules......

Instead I'll whine, complain and carry on,
senseless arguements I promise to dwell upon.
do what I want without remorse,
Let threads continue on thier course.
Belittle, flame and claim moral high ground,
Start a new thread and go another round.
I'll post and post until I'm heard,
I'll keep going until locked or I get final word.
I"ll continue to make Bergie's life hard,
Until he boots me from the yard.

thats a little bit more like it..... passtion and fire of an issue makes it a good topic.... how many times have you sat around in a "round table" type situation...and debaited issues without someone getting fired up... when people express thier feelings on an issue... it makes the dissustion all the more fun and fullfilling.... sometimes flaming dose happen..but thats life... if you think a post is getting out of controll..then dont read it anymore...simple as that..... but what you might think is an out of controll subject and a fight....might just be a realy heated disscution that the parties that are getting hot about find very importaint to them.....someone once made a comment in another tread that a topic was stupid and the parties should just stop...well..thats fine if your on the outside looking in...but what is stupid to you...isnt to someone else....
and yes..i have had drawn out yelling argements with fellow members of my crews at time..over issues.... its part of life...on one is going to get along all the time.... but after its all said and done... the next time that i work with the person...its water over the dam.... its a clean slate....
so in short......no one is going to get along with eveyone..all the time.... but sometimes its better to let things to run its course at times....
just my 2cents

No, I don't think so, This site is a very poor description of The RR world, and the world for that matter. Your buying Groceries, and you can't find whatr you want, and you decide to swear really loudly.. What is going to happen to you? Maybe a few people may lift their heads, but that is about it..

Your the engineer on a train, and your Crew alert goes off, and puts the Trains breakes on. You swear really loudly. Who is going to tell you otherwise?

On this site- you have figures WHO WILL tell you what and what not to do as approprtiate bahavior. In the real world, do you have people who follow you arounbd like that every day, telling you what is socially acceptable and what isn't?

The last time I had that, I couldn't find the Green beans and was getting really angry, So I let out a few words, questionable to, And dsomeone who thought they could show me up tried to pull me up. They Failed, misserably.

Look if you want to really get down to it- why do people have a knack to stop people from swearing? Heck, i'll stop when someone tells me Why they keep pedaling that stupid line, or where its origin comes from.

Ready for this? heres a good story.

the year 1200-1600 AD, Britian is on the war path, Any language other then Anglo-Saxin english, uttered in Britian, will have you executed. Take evry woird you find unaaceptable, look up the origin, German, Deutch.. All european languages, Even some are from Latin English, which was a Crime, during 1200-1600 to utter in Great britian, and if you did you were executed, msot likely hung.

Thats where swearing comes from.

How Stupid is that?

Look many of you shutter to hear such words, But I refuse, and mark this down, To carry along side with me a 500+ year old War against what English is better, The anglo saxin English or the Latin English, and that it is imoral to integrade other languages into English.

Like these words? Kindergarten (German) Bungalo (Indian) Both those words would have you killed in Great Britian, yet many of you use those today. The F word carried no difference in penalty, it was simply a Deutch word and was not permitted.

If you don't like my English, I suggest you avoid me.

Now i went off on a Tangent, where was I...

Freedom of speech last time I checked meant Free Speech, and there were no exemptions.

Deviant behavior curves society, even when your asleep, If it wasn't for deviance, we would be stuck in the same place we were 30 years ago

I can thing of 5 things that weren't acceptable 50 years ago, but are now.. actually I can think of more.
