locomotive identification

im a engineer and other than being able to hear the differance between the emd and the ge engine i couldnt tell you if it was a sd 40 50 60 or a dash 8 or 9 unless i looked it up and saw what it was. all the info i need is tonnage ratings. if you happen to get around some railroad employees see if they have a loco hand book. all the engines we run and some lease engines and up engines we get are listed. then teach yourself the differance in these units. and on most engines now the railroad is putting what type engines they are under the cab window.

Not sure about a website, but there is a book called The Contemporary Diesel Spotters Guide that sounds just like what you are in need of.

This is what I am asking about. Is there a website that teaches you how to identify the locomotives by vent shapes, cab configuration, etc?

A lot of them are actually marked right below the cab window. Others you have to know the difference between the shape of the vents on the locomotive.

Is there a website that teaches how to identify locomotives by site? I'd like to know how to tell the difference between a SD-70, SD-90, Dash 8, Dash 9, etc. when I see them roll by.
