Road names
Posted by Noah Hofrichter on Saturday, April 10, 2004 9:14 AM
What do road names like SOO and CSX stand for? I've always wanted to know, but I could never find out.

Thanks for any help, Noah[:p]

SOO is an abreviated and stylized form of the original name of Minneapolis, St Paul and Sault (pronounced SOO) St. Marie Railway, that was eventually officially shortened to simply SOO LINE RAILROAD. CSX is a modern version of C(Chessie System) S (Seaboard System) and X (as in many times...X...more). Hope this helps you out.

one correction on what CSX stands for....
the X stands for all the other intrestes that the 2 other railroads had...as in non rail road holdings.. like hotel chains...container shipping corporations..(cargo ships)..and so on... this information use to be posted on the CSX home page..but i havent seen it for some time now...

Did the Wisconsin Centeral buy the SSAM, because I've seen centerbeam lumber car models that have a Wisconsin central packaging name, but there numbers are SSAM whatever the number is?
