Flowers and seeds I think...

That's my understanding as well.  It's entirely possible that the boiler is coated with poppy seeds, f'rinstance.

 On KTLA's coverage, there was no mention of the Southern Pacific at all, just borg. Borg comes to town and destroys all history.

For anyone interested in seeing it, here's a shot of the City of Rosevilles's entry in the Rose Parade yesterday.  Roseville is home to a large former Southern Pacific yard and the float celebrated the city's railroad heritage.
