New York Central Steam
Posted by choochoobuff on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 7:09 PM

Having been to the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum in Strasburg this past summer, I have a question.  There is certainly a fairly good sample of Pennsy steam locos remaining,  What happened to the NYC steam?  Did no one have the forsight to keep a few of the Mohawks and Hudsons around?  While I am sure they were scrapped, it amazes me that such a significant fallen flag cannibalized its whole fleet.

To the best of my knowledge, no large NYC steam survived.  AFAIK, the only existing NYC steam locomotive left in NY state is an 0-6-0 next to Utica Union Station (that's what they say, anyhow).

Maybe we could get that group that built a brand new replica steamer in England to build a Niagara or a Mohawk....

Some did survive, but not many, and none of their Famous Hudsons.(This should be considered a Crime against History and/or Society) The Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, MO. has a NYC Mohawk #2933, but as you can see she is not ready for display yet. These photos were taken in late July of this year (2008) while I was visiting the Museum. If I hadn't been talking to one of the staff, I wouldn't have known they had her, he took me "behind the scenes" where the general public don't normally get to go. I believe there is one other Mohawk also, but I don't remember where it is at. I don't think any of the Niagras survived the scrapper's torch.

I would HIGHLY reccomend a visit to the Museum if you can find a way to make it happen, a very impressive collection, plan a full day or more if you can.

There are thirteen surviving NYC steam locomotives:

the largest  being the two Mohawks..
Sadly no Hudsons or Niagaras survived.

a fairly good cross section of PRR steamers was saved..
with the notable exceptions of the T, J and Q class.
