specs. for the gp38
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, March 29, 2004 8:36 AM
I am looking for the specs. on the gp38. In particular, the weight, horsepower and, if possible, the throttle positions as a percent of power output. I have not found a general source for detailed locomotive specs. Any help appreciated. thank you.

Here you go:

notch eng RPM THP NTHP gal/hr
8 900 2004 1881 123
7 815 1746 1639 103.3
6 734 1438 1350 82.5
5 649 1143 1074 64.2
4 560 854 802 47.6
3 479 573 538 32.8
2 394 278 261 17.8
1 315 83 78 7.8
idle 315 0 4.4
low idle 255 0 3.5

THP is horsepower out of the engine into the main generator. NTHP is electrical power out of the main gen. headed for the traction motors. All numbers are AAR std conditions (28.86" Hg barometer, 60 deg F air and fuel, 0.845 sp grav for fuel, 19350 BTU/lbm higher heating value)

Typical GP38 is 255,000# including fuel.

Don,

Could you post the same data for a GP40-2?

I've wondered what the effect of the turbocharger is at lower power settings, and the linearity of the power settings at different notches!

8 900 3074 2886 168.3
7 818 2595 1436 141.2
6 732 1939 1820 105.7
5 647 1447 1358 79.4
4 560 1004 942 56.2
3 479 659 619 38.1
2 392 371 348 23.1
1 315 81 76 8.6

This stuff comes from stuff I collected in an earlier life in the Mechanical Dept at Conrail.

Thanks Don, I can use that one too. I have that engine comming in at 261000 lbs, does that sound right? I am running the Trainz simulator and some of the engines don't seem to behave in a realistic manner. There is a config. file we can edit for each engine.
Do you still work for the rr? Are you working for NS or CSX and where at? I modeled a stretch of old Conrail, now NS, around Jackson Mich. using Trainz.
Thanks again, Robert Graves.
