Pete,
Idiocacy is not confined to just kids. We've all seen reports of adults being killed as a result of their similar preoccupation and total disregard for safety on the tracks and around trains.

Having survived exposure to hostile environments long enough to reach retirement age, I can only shake my head in wonder. In my original career, people that lacking in situational awareness were usually returned to their next of kin in body bags.
My sympathy goes entirely to the train crew. I know the helpless feeling of watching a disaster unfold, with absolutely no chance of affecting the outcome.
As for the youngster (and the parents who failed to teach him the basics of survival,) what will you wager that they'll hire some ambulance chaser and try to sue the rail carrier, the engineer, the city (for not building a ten foot concrete wall along the right-of-way line...)

I dunno, when I was a kid and I had to walk along the IHB/NYC/B&O tracks to go to work (not between the rails) I was so paranoid I must have pivoted my head 180 degrees to check behind me at least once every 30 seconds. And I wasn't wearing headphones.
Did the I-pod survive?
