Last Chance
One stupid question... how much do those steel slabs at 8 x 20 weight anyway? I understand aluminum weights but not that of slab steel.

I talked to one of the foremen on the job and he said the slabs weighed 40 tons. 2 were loaded in each gondola car.

Steel weighs approx 500 lbs/cu ft. A slab weighing 80000 lbs (40 tons) and 8" x 20 ft long would be 12 ft wide. Could it be that the slabs are 40000 lbs each, which would make them 6 ft wide, instead of 40 tons each?

Northtowne, I did'nt measure the slabs in this building, it's just an estimate - probably wrong.

Right before the end of the job I had to deliver rigging for a load test and for the load test they used 1 full slab and a half slab. The weight was a little over 60 tons.
