Name That Shortline/Regional
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, March 13, 2004 4:52 PM
My American Shortline Railway Guide is from 1991. It is the 4th Edition. I was wondering if there was a new edition out now? Just for fun I thought we could name the current short lines and regionals. If you know for sure they are still operating then please list them in this thread. I know some of them no longer are operating. [|)] [:(!] [:(]

If you have railfanned them and have pics you can also post the pics here for everyone to see. This could be interesting and educational. [:p] [;)] [:)]

Arkansas & Missouri Railroad

Arkansas & Missouri - Very much alive (Tony Hannold's all ALCO outfit) ex BN/Frisco line

Little Rock & Western - I believe still owned by RMC, shortened somewhat (ex-CRIP line)...going ALCO hunting Jim?

Branson Scenic...still running as a tennant on RailAmerica's Missouri & North Arkansas

Kyle...still runs in Kansas, Colorado & Nebraska , part of RailAmerica (Kyles holding company is no more - all railroads to RailAmerica (ex CRIP line)

Iowa Northwestern RR (no "&") still runs, owned by General Railways, Inc. (Ex. CRIP, see embargo thread)

In Colorado, up and kicking:

Rock & Rail (RRRR)
Great Western Ry (GW)
Colorado Kansas & Pacific (CKPR) also owns Colorado Central (Court Hammond)
Windsor Severance & Eaton (new)
Nebraska Kansas Colorado RailNet (NKCR)
Colorado & Wyoming Railroad (C&W)
Cimarron Valley RR (CVRR)
Denver Rock Island Terminal RR
Denver Union Terminal

Toast: Trinidad Railway, Cadillac & Lake City RR, Colorado & Eastern, City of La Junta

Jim: on the common carriers, look at the lists that the railroad retirement board carries to see who is still here or not, especially the RRB2 and RRB3 lists.....

Find an Official Railway Equipment Register and you'll get an eyeful...if they're alive enough to have a reporting mark assigned to them, they'll be in there. And if they have some equipment listed, they'll also have listed their connections (junction points) with other railroads.

Notwithstanding all of that, I certainly wouldn't mind seeing another edition of the shortline guide!

Seems to me like I heard a number quotes indicating that there are 653 regional and short line RR's. Looks like this post could have some legs.

How about the:
Lake Superior and Ishpeming (former Alco home)
(and)
Escanaba and Lake Superior

As I pointed out a while back the 4th Edition is the most recent. We do NEED a new one and Kalmbach should light a fire under the designated person to get started...

I'm sure if they call with a nice advance offer the writer could get started in no time...

And, no, I'm not volunteering...

For a tourist line, Mid continent RR, located in North freedom WI. It runs on a 4 mile quarry railroad branch line that leads to an old CNW now Wisconsin and Southern railroad line. Unfortunately it doesn't run on the old CNW main line just the quarry branch line.

Looked back at my American Shortline Railway Guides and found my most recent is the 5th Edition by Ed Lewis published in 1996. It is the most recent as far as I know. We definitely need a NEW one...

Guru? Huh? What the? Just a humble mudchicken out on the high prairie. On here with everybody else to have a little fun, learn from each other and maybe keep up with LC, IronKen, UniHead and the others....and avoid being the main course for Mookie on the prowl!

Also, have had the good fortune to work in many different places around railroads and learn from some really good teachers.... Gotta keep tabs on what's going on and where the work is at......Also a little opinionated from a trackman, technician and managers point of view- as if you had not noticed[;)]. We still really need to find a carknocker around here somewhere to get active on the forum.....

Slic,
Scratch HB&T off your list, it was closed, then spilt between its member lines a few years ago.
The northwest half went to BNSF, the southwest half is UP.
UP got East yard, Basin and Booth yards and the Milby street roundhouse and turntable in the deal.
